Best ever result at GC Intercounties Tournament for Herts team captained by John Noble
GC Inter-Counties Tournament – Cheltenham, 19-20 August
An excellent result for Hertfordshire, who finished in third place. Herts ended the weekend with 7 wins from 11 matches: behind Somerset (8 wins) and Nottinghamshire (11 wins). Hertfordshire was promoted from Division 2 two years ago and this is their best ever result in the GC Inter-Counties. The format of the weekend was an all-play-all in which each match consisted of one doubles game and two singles games. The team (from left to right: John Taylor, Kevin Connolly, Jason Carley, Nick Archer and John Noble (Capt)) played uniformly and consistently well across all eleven matches as illustrated by their winning 16 of their 22 singles games, all against some of the best players in the Country.

Lawns open from January 16th
Here is a message from Keith and the Grounds Team
The usual Winter rule of not playing when the grass is frost-covered still applies. Also please be aware that the surface remains wet and patchy in places. If your ball lies on mud, move it to the nearest playable spot which won't risk damaging the surface.
The forecast is for yet more wet and cold weather, but as it seems it isn't going to get better any time soon we're reopening the lawn while we continue to work on the worst area, alongside the hedge by Court 1. We've been spiking and spraying iron to kill most of the moss and to strengthen the grass, and have recently given it the first cut of the year.
However, the surface is still soggy and won't improve until a reasonable period of dry and warmer weather allows the grass to start recovering, but we can work around that at the same time as allowing play to continue on the smaller courts.

Sad News
We are sorry to hear of the death of Dr John Alabaster who has been a valued and enthusiastic club member since 2000. He was polite, patient and kind. We will miss him.
For many years John was the Club Handicapper for Golf Croquet and he took great care to ensure our handicaps were fair. John had a wealth of knowledge about the GC rules and was happy to explain them and to offer coaching advice.
He designed a hoop lifter which is in daily use when the hoops have been driven hard into the ground. There is a video of this in action. See below.
John's memorial service is at 12.30pm on Friday 13th January at Harwood Park Crematorium SG2 8XT
