Match Reports 2024
EACF GC Handicap match v Newport Oaks
Tuesday 20th August
Our last match of the season against a strong Newport Oaks team was very enjoyable although not a complete success. Despite valiant efforts from the team (Stuart Haggett, Sheila Haggett, Cliff Banks and Tracy Martin) we unfortunately lost 8-10. In fact, once all the hoop scores were counted the result was 106 hoops for each team!
Tracy and Sheila kicked off the proceedings with a very impressive 7-1 in their Doubles match and thereafter each round was fairly evenly matched but, overall, Newport just managed two more wins than us. However - the weather was good, the company was good, the cakes were good - Good Day all round!!
That was our last match of the season and my thanks to all those players who took part - we may not have done too well overall but I think that we all played some good croquet and, more importantly, enjoyed it. I just hope that we can all do it again next year.
EACF GC Handicap match Letchworth v Enfield West
Tuesday 13 August Good News!! - On a very warm afternoon (you could even say 'hot') Letchworth won their match against Enfield West yesterday and we are all very happy! Terence was playing in his first match and played a blinder - he beat their 9 handicapper 7-0 and Enfield veteran player David Frost (2 handicap) 7-5. Late replacement Colin Gregory played his usual steady game and, with 4 wins, reduced his handicap to 5, Graham won 2 - leaving the final score at 10-8. Well played the team!! Team: Colin Gregory, Graham Styles, Tony Hyde and Terence Ilott. Enfield- David Frost, Nigel Owen, Graham Curtis, Andrew Yianni |

GC B - Level play team v Leighton Linslade
5th August.
The team comprised of
Trish Noble
David Clancey
Coin Gregory
Sheila Haggett
Although we had a good team and we all worked hard, Leighton had a convincing win. The lawns were somewhat challenging, and they were hard to get to grips with, partly as we had to hit the ball really hard. The final score of 13 -5 did not reflect how close some of the games were. So, another loss which left us lounging at the bottom of the leader board. This was our final match of the year - lets hope for better results next year.

GC Level play match v Watford
June 28th We had a very interesting game against Watford - the sun shone, the cake was good (thank you Graham), and the opposing team very pleasant. The team comprised of Trish, Graham S, David C and John Hall. Sadly we were outplayed by an on form Watford and lost 7 hoops to 11. The interference of an ex - Watford guy was not helpful and I have submitted a complaint to the league manager. I shall wait with interest to see what the response is. |

AC League match v Northampton
May 3rd
Following our "so close" match last time out at Wrest Park, the same team (myself, Colin Davies and Sheila & Stuart Haggett) played together again, this time at Northampton. The weather also turned up to take part - it rained lightly all morning and then very heavily all afternoon. It'll take Colin all day today to get his car dried out.
Happily, a different result to report. A 3-3 draw was on the cards from the moment that Colin and Stuart despatched Northampton's top team of Lionel Tibble (-1) and Mike Hills (2) by 26-0, a complete whitewash which left Northampton stunned.
Colin's fine winning form continued in the afternoon singles, and Sheila joined him on the podium with an excellent win, especially in those conditions. As the afternoon wore on it became impossible to hit a ball across the lawn, and at times it would just stop dead in the puddling mud.
A fun day in the sun next time would be appreciated please, John.

GC Level Play match Falcons v Wrest Park
April 30th
We had a great day yesterday playing a lovely friendly team from Wrest
Park. Unfortunately we did lose 8-10 but I don't think any of us minded
as it was a lovely day played in good spirits and it was a close match,
in the end it was all down to luck!! Our Man of the Match was Colin
Davies who won 3 of his games, I myself won two and Heather and Sheila
Haggett won one each, the Doubles round was one game each.
I have had a very nice email from Marilyn, their Captain, this morning
thanking us for a very enjoyable day with such good company and saying
how much they enjoyed playing on our lovely flat lawns - and our
excellent offering of cakes!! Thanks to Heather, Sheila and myself for
those!

GC Handicap match v Meldreth
May 26th
I am gutted to tell you that we absolutely lost our match on Friday against Meldreth. Trish and Graham were unlucky to lose 2 golden hoops each and the team were only saved by Trish from a total whitewash when she won against their best player 7-3. Your captain played the worst match of her life losing all three games (only one golden hoop in mitigation). The final score was 9-1 to the home team.
As we only lost one of our matches last year, we must hope that we shall do the same this year and that we have got that one out of the way early!!

AC League match v Wrest Park
April 18th
We played away at Wrest Park yesterday, but sadly just lost 1-5.
It could have been so different - the doubles matches finished -1T and -2T. So close !
Anyway, we move on and look forward to our next match - away to Northampton on Friday 3 May, with the same team of myself, Colin Davies and Sheila & Stuart Haggett.
