Please note :
Alison Maugham is unable to come for another coaching session this year.
She promises to come back next year.
Alison would like suggestions for subjects we would like her to cover in the future.
Please pass any ideas to Tracy, Andrea or Brian Havill

End of Summer Social

We intended to have our usual end-of-season social event on Friday 13 September but we’ve now decided to have a daytime event instead on
Saturday 14 September at 11am.

We will start off with informal doubles play (no whites) on a ‘first come get to play basis’, until around 12 30 and then there will be refreshments with wine/soft drinks and nibbles.  This will provide an opportunity to play croquet before the lawns are closed for the usual Autumn maintenance and for you to socialise with your croquet colleagues.  Sue Bathmaker is organising this and will be in touch with you later this month with more detai
ls.

In the meantime - Please put the date in your diary.

Summer Garden Party
Thanks to all who made it a great success

GC  High Handicap competition

Seven of our newer players took part in the High Handicap competition on Saturday 3rd. All games were singles, and level play since the handicaps were similar.
The competition was won, for the 2nd time, by Bryan Hawley. A well deserved win for him, and it was a good day out for all.

Alabaster Memorial Trophy.
Congratulations to Trish Noble who won the Alabaster Memorial Trophy on this its second year.  The one-day competition was run as a progressive doubles (a bit like our ever-popular 'fun doubles', though with four full 13-point games).  Trish finished with 26 hoops out of a potential maximum of 28!  Sheila and Stuart Haggett finished joint second with 25 hoops apiece and no fewer than five had a score of 24.  Congratulations to all who took part, the standard of play was exceptional.  The weather, however, was not kind.  It was (very) cold and wet for most of the time, only brightening up at the very end: weather was so very typical of northern latitudes in late Winter.  But we managed to keep going with the camaraderie of shared adversity and a fair dose of dry humour.  Cakes and hot tea helped too.  For those who don't know, we set up the competition in memory of John and Beryl, who enjoyed playing GC doubles so very much, and who both gave a lot of their time in support of the Club.   Indeed for many years John was the only qualified GC Referee in the Club and one of the few players who knew and understood the Rules.  And he was not shy in telling you when you were about to fault!  We played with 14 participants, but could have accommodated 16.  All proceeds are donated to the Alzheimer's Society; thank you to those who gave generously.

Best ever result at GC Intercounties Tournament for Herts team captained by John Noble

Picture
GC Inter-Counties Tournament – Cheltenham, 19-20 August

An excellent result for Hertfordshire, who finished in third place.  Herts ended the weekend with 7 wins from 11 matches: behind Somerset (8 wins) and Nottinghamshire (11 wins).  Hertfordshire was promoted from Division 2 two years ago and this is their best ever result in the GC Inter-Counties.  The format of the weekend was an all-play-all in which each match consisted of one doubles game and two singles games.  The team (from left to right: John Taylor, Kevin Connolly, Jason Carley, Nick Archer and John Noble (Capt)) played uniformly and consistently well across all eleven matches as illustrated by their winning 16 of their 22 singles games, all against some of the best players in the Country.
